Let It Snow, No!

Stay warm…

Oh, the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we’ve no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Oh no!

Who would think, besides OPEC, that 500 gallons of heating oil might be comparable to…

  • A year of cigarettes-What an incentive to quit?
  • A year of entertainment-Forget concerts, sightseeing, and an evening of dinner and a movie, turn the thermostat down, snuggle under a blanket, and read a book from the library. Maybe, go to the library and read. It’s probably warmer.
  • Nine sheep-Shear the sheep. Learn to knit socks, sweaters, and afghans. Five hundred gallons of oil might not last until spring.
  • A move to Panama or Costa Rica-It’s possible to live on less than $2,500.00 a month, the cost of 500 gallons of oil. Panama has no income tax on money earned outside its borders. Costa Rica has a public healthcare system that charges 7-10 percent of household income for high-quality health services. No heating oil is required.

Consider this:

The gentleman who delivered the parents’ oil has gas heat. When he turned his furnace on, nothing happened. The man who brought warmth to others had no heat, the irony.

After a call to the repairman and a new part, he was able to keep his family warm.

The oil deliveryman endured complaints about the cost of something he had no control over. We discussed the state of things, and the lack of control over these worldly things. We wished each other pleasant holidays with family. We parted with warmer feelings. Human connection costs us nothing.

No matter how markets fluctuate and the powers over us conspire to keep us cold, we can spread a different kind of warmth.
